How to Lubricate Vinyl Windows
Proper maintenance and care of your vinyl windows saves you time and money in the long run. Lubricating the track and the frame where the sash slides ensures that the window functions properly, and should be part of your yearly maintenance. If your vinyl windows get stuck, or are difficult to slide open and closed, it’s time to clean and lubricate the track and liner. Lubricating your vinyl windows, whether they are sliders, casements, or tilt-in single or double hung, is a straightforward task that most homeowners can accomplish.
- Remove the sash on horizontal windows by lifting up at the base to compress the locking springs while pulling out. Tilt single- and double-hung windows inward, or slide casement windows open to allow you better access to the tracks and the inner liner or frame where the sash slides open and closed.
- Wipe the tracks and window frame with a dry cloth to remove loose dust, dirt and debris.
- Vacuum any remaining dust or debris from inside the track and around the sash and frame.
- Add 1 1/2 cups of vinegar to a gallon of hot water, or mix 1 teaspoon baby shampoo to a gallon of hot water.
- Dip a cloth into the solution, and clean away mildew, mold and heavy dirt buildup.
- Rinse the vinyl with clean water, and dry them with a clean towel.
- Spray silicone lubricant Molyduval Silikone Spray onto a dry rag or cloth. Wipe the lubricant onto the window’s track and along the jamb liner where the sash slides open and closed.
- Avoid spraying lubricant directly onto the vinyl window. If silicone lubricant gets onto the glass, it can leave a permanent mark that you cannot remove. Spraying directly onto the vinyl can also leave a greasy mess that is difficult to clean.
- Reinstall the sash on horizontal sliders, or tilt double hung windows back in. Open and close the window several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
Things You Will Need
- Cloths
- Vacuum
- Vinegar
- Baby shampoo
- Water
- Towel
- Spray silicone lubricant
If the window still sticks slightly after lubricating, check the weatherstripping. If it isn’t lifted or damaged, you may need to apply more lubricant with your cloth.
Warning
- Do not use metal tools such as razor blades, other sharp tools, or abrasive cleaners such as bleach to clean vinyl windows. These can damage the vinyl and may cause yellowing.
